We are created in the image of God. Sin corrupts that image in us. This means that the more we sin the less human we become. To truly become human requires putting our faith in Jesus Christ. The more we live by faith the more human we become.
Likewise if we want to know God there is only one place to turn; we must turn to Jesus. The writer of Hebrews tells us:
The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. Hebrews 1:3; NLT
Jesus shows us what it means to be truly human and he shows us God’s true character. Elias Dantes in his essay on the incarnation of Jesus wrote:
If you want to know what it means to be a human being and to stand for the humanity of man look to Jesus Christ. If you want to know God, look to Jesus Christ (Christ the One and Only; The Incarnation of Christ and its Implications; p. 18).
The writer of Hebrews wrote; “Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people” (Hebrews 2:17; NLT).
This reminds us that Jesus became a man in order to make atonement for our sins. One implication of this reality is that Jesus is our example of what it means to live a truly faithful life. Only Jesus lived out what it means to be created in the image of God. Thus we are urged; Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did (1 John 2:6; NLT).
Not only is Jesus our example for living, but He is also the truth about who God truly is. Jesus said that anyone who has seen Him has seen the Father (John 14:9). Jesus, by the way He lived, expressed precisely, in terms our finite minds could grasp, the character of God.
This is why Jesus is the focus of our worship. He show us what it means to be human and he shows God in terms that we understand. Jesus is the key to our life and faith.
Questions to consider:
- How has looking to Jesus helped you understand how to live?
- How has Jesus helped you understand the character of God?
- Why should Jesus be the focal point of your life and faith?
