What does hope look like? The image that comes to my mind is the picture of light. It is the rising in the east to chase away the night.
Depression and hopelessness can rightly be described as darkness, and many times that darkness can be very overwhelming and oppressive. It can feel as if the darkness itself is alive and dragging me down into the pit of hell. I can get so tired fighting against the darkness and it is so easy to give into the temptation to give up.
Thank God I don’t have to fight this battle alone! The apostle Paul wrote that followers of Jesus have been rescued from the kingdom of darkness and have been brought into the kingdom of the one who is called the light of the world (Colossians 1:13-14). Jesus, through the power of his resurrection, chases away the oppressive darkness that came with sin and death!
The Good News is that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, established him as king, and holds the universe together resides in me. Amazing! This is why Paul in Ephesians urges people to pray and ask God to flood their lives with his light so they can live confidently with hope.
Lord Jesus fill me with your life and light so I can be a person who shines bringing hope to this dark and dying world. Amen.
